MyPro Writer’s Course

Limited view to protect confidential and proprietary information.

Snapshot

I developed this nine module course, using Understanding by Design (UbD) - the Backward Design framework, to solve a long-standing problem for MyPro Resumes. This small resume firm (that I co-own) was struggling to train new Writers on subjective decision making and their unique development process. You can view three of the nine modules below. (This limited view protects MyPro’s proprietary information.) The course was developed in Articulate Rise and includes multimedia, job aids, real world examples (learning through observation) and scenario-based assessments.

Process

Identify Desired Result

Writers will provide MyPro clients with an exceptional customer experience and deliver effective career search products aligned with MyPro’s high standards.

Specifically, Writers will:

  1. Correctly and completely adhere to the steps of the MyPro discovery and resume development process.

  2. Accurately determine if a prospective client is a good fit for MyPro’s servies.

  3. Enter, update, and review prospect and client status using the company’s Client Database.

  4. Select the corresponding company email template and attachments to communicate with clients across process steps.

  5. Effectively navigate the MyPro Workspace to find or upload client documents, homework assignments, and resources.

  6. Review the client’s homework and either: a) recognize the need for more information, or b) extract the necessary insights to the their resume draft.

  7. Choose the appropriate resume format for the client’s target field and roles.

  8. Build a rough draft document using the client’s homework and work history.

  9. Produce a list of custom questions for the client that will: a) help fill gaps in the rough draft document, b) elicit RAS (results, action, situation) details for accomplishments, and c) enable them to address any potential employer red flags.

  10. Use a combination of their training and personal judgment to make resume writing decisions that: a) are in the best interest of the client, b) align with MyPro’s standards, and c) align with industry best practices and professional ethics.

  11. Develop a final resume for the client that effectively applies the firm’s unique methodology and subjective editorial standards.

  12. Receive and respond to client feedback in a professional and constructive manner, both educating the client (about resume best practices) and leveraging the client’s field expertise to elevate the final product.

  13. Uphold client confidentiality and data security.

Determine Assessment Evidence

  1. Learners will successfully pass formative quizes at the end of each module (before proceeding to the next module).

  2. Learners will demonstrate accurate application of lesson content through direct practice. They will journal (Explain and Interpret) about their project decisions, select communication templates (Apply), send emails to mock clients (Apply), and update a mock Client Database for each step in the process (Apply). Their practice accuracy will be evaluated by a Senior Writer and feedback will be provided (Have Perspective, Empathize).

  3. Learners will successfully produce a MyPro Standards-aligned resume, using mock client data (Apply). They will be graded using a rubric.

Plan Learning Experiences & Instruction

Modules were developed using Articulate Rise to enable rapid development and easy changes across iterations. The firm also had a wide array of multimedia elements that they wanted to incorporate into the training program. The team and I fleshed out the optimal ordering and length of lessons, considering sequential dependency, scaffolding, chunking, and pacing. The use of mock clients (based on messy real world situations) provided a narrative arc that made the lessons more engaging and enabled transfer. We incorporated offline time for learners to self-evaluate, rethink, and revise their work.
